What are Intramural Sports?

Intramural Sports are activities programmed by Recreational Services to provide recreational opportunities in a fun, yet somewhat-competitive atmosphere, for the University of Iowa Community. Current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and affiliates of the University of Iowa that have a Recreational Services Membership, and have purchased an Intramural Sports Membership for that semester are eligible for participation in the Intramural Sports Program. Student Rec Memberships are included with payment of the Student Rec Fee that goes along with tuition. Spouses/domestic partners of an eligible individual are also eligible if they have a Recreational Services Membership and an Intramural Sports Membership. An Intramural Sports Membership can be purchased at any time. We offer leagues and events for the athlete who wants some competition and also leagues and events for those who just want to play for fun, to get some exercise, or just to spend some fun time with friends. Whether you have played sports all your life, or have never played any sport at all, we have something for you to enjoy.

How do I form a team and how do teams register?

If you’re used to playing traditional team sports, or want to give one a try, register a team for an Intramural Sports league. We set up Men's/Open, Women's, Co-Rec (Males and Females), and Open (No Gender Restrictions) leagues, depending on the sport.

Forming a Team
The easiest, and most common, way to get involved in team sports is to form a team of your own. It could be you and some friends, maybe the people of your residence hall or the neighbors in your apartment complex, as long as they are all students, faculty, staff, spouses, alumni, or affiliates of the University of Iowa, have a Recreational Services Membership, and have purchased an
Intramural Sports Membership. Student organizations such as fraternities and sororities, as well as other campus groups, often put together teams. Ask your organization at its next group meeting. To find out how many players you will need for a complete team, check out each sport’s rules prior to registration.

Registering a Team
Almost all of our registration is done using this website,
IMLeagues.com. Information on how to create a team using IMLeagues.com can be found by checking out our IMLeagues Registration Instructions. Registration is quick and easy. The key is to know registration deadlines, and get your teams put together and ready-to-go before the deadlines. Then when all your teammates have been added to the team roster, you can simply select a spot in the league or division, and you will be ready to go.

Scheduling
For bigger team sports such as Flag Football, Volleyball, Softball, Soccer, and Basketball, teams will be scheduled to play once a week during the regular season. During registration, teams will select what day, and sometimes the time, they would like to play based on the available options. Divisions open one week prior to that sport's registration deadline. Having your team prepared prior to divisions opening will allow a better chance at getting the division you would like, as registration occurs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Team Captain Requirements
If you are a team captain, you are in charge of making sure all participants on your team are eligible according to eligibility requirements stated in the
Intramural Sports Rules and Regulations. You are also responsible for the sportsmanlike behavior of your teammates and fans. Finally, as team captain, you will serve as your team’s main contact for any instances in which the Sport Programs Staff needs to contact your team.

Regular Season Schedules and Team Rosters
All schedules will be available on
IMLeagues.com, unless otherwise noted. Additions to team rosters can also be completed on IMLeagues.com. If you wish to remove a player from your team, you can do so on IMLeagues.com, as long as that players has not checked-in to participate on that team, and removing that player doesn't move your team roster below the minimum number of players requirement.

What if I do not have a team on which to play?

If you do not have enough people to form your own team, you are considered a "Free Agent" for that sport. To try and get connected with other participants looking to form a team, you can join our Iowa Intramural Sports Free Agent Group on FacebookJoin this group, and you can connect with other people looking for teammates, or captains looking for players to add to their teams! The Sport Programs staff will work to try and get Free Agents on the Facebook page connected with each other to form a team.

You can also list yourself as a Free Agent for each sport on IMLeagues. To do so, go to the sport's home page on IMLeagues. Then, click on the league for which you would like to join as a Free Agent. Once you are on the league page (i.e. Men's/Open, Women's, etc.), click "Join as a Free Agent" and fill out the requested information.

Do I have to pay a fee for every sport I wish to play?

No! With a few limited exceptions, if you have a Recreational Services Membership, purchasing an Intramural Sports Membership makes you eligible for all sports/events that semester. So, in the Fall if you want to play Flag Football, Volleyball, 3v3 Basketball and more, you can, all for the $30.00 Intramural Sports Membership. Or, if you are just filling-in for a team and you are only going to play once, you can purchase a Single Play Pass and play one time. There are also a few select events, like our Friday Night Series events, that do not require a membership!

Why won't my payment go through?

Often times, users have issues with payments not going through when they are using the wrong address as their billing address. Most often, users are entering an Iowa City address when the correct billing address for the card is a home/permanent address. Any unsuccessful attempts may show as pending charges on a card/bank statement, but the pending charges will drop off in a few days.

I purchased a membership through IMLeagues, but I am still showing as ineligible. Why?

Students, faculty, staff, affiliates, alumni, and spouses must have both an Intramural Sports membership (for sports that require such) and a Recreational Services membership in order to be eligible for participation in Intramural Sports. Students that have not paid the student recreation fee as part of their tuition and fees do not have a Recreational Services membership. Faculty, staff, affiliates, alumni, or spouses that have not purchased a Recreational Services membership are ineligible. Options for Recreational Services memberships can be found here.

Do teams have practices?

Intramural teams are free to practice as much or as little as they want. The Intramural Sports program DOES NOT schedule practice times for Intramural teams. You are free to use our facilities to practice, but teams must follow the rules and restrictions of our recreation facilities.

What is the difference between Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs?

Intramural Sports are more casual activities that take place over the course of several weeks. Sport Clubs, on the other hand, are student organizations that are more involved in their sport/activity. Sport Clubs practice regularly and travel to compete against clubs from other schools. There are close to 40 Sport Clubs at the University of Iowa, and you can find more information about them on the Sport Clubs Home Page.
